About NELM
NELM Development Trust is part of the national New Deal for Communities (NDC) programme. It is a community regeneration programme working for and with residents of 3 estates in the west of Norwich.
NELM Development Trust is a company limited by guarantee, and we became a registered charity in 2006.
The Trust's themes for Year 10 of the programme (2009/10) are:
Work and Worklessness
Community Learning
Community Engagement
Development of the Community Park
The Trust was formed in 2000 from an active partnership of community groups and statutory agencies after the partnership was successful in its bid for £35.2M of New Deal for Communities Funds. It has over 3200 households (mainly of local authority housing pre-1945 vintage) and some 8,800 people.
When the trust was forming, the area was rated as one of the most deprived neighbourhoods in the UK. Sandwiched between some of the most affluent regions of Norwich, the area had long been acknowledged as one of significant need though characterised by strong and extended family and community groups.
Since starting in 2000 the Trust has funded over 200 projects, varying from the long-term (e.g. the Bowthorpe School Site development) to the more immediate (e.g. small grants for dance group costumes or football strips). View elsewhere on the site some of the projects we have supported, many of whom continue to run in the area without further support.
