Bowthorpe School Site
The 38 acre site of the former Bowthorpe High School and Gurney Middle School was acquired from Norfolk County Council by NELM Development Trust in 2003. The schools were closed in the mid-1980's despite strong local protests and there has always been a strong feeling that a major part of the land should remain as green space and other uses for the benefit of the local community.
When the schools were first shut down and the High School buildings demolished the school playing fields were closed for public access. The site was neglected and poorly maintained. Members of the community organised a massive clean up operation and made the area fit for children and their families to use for sport and leisure.
Working with our partner organisations NELM set about preparing a community master plan for the future development of the site. Wide consultation and planning was undertaken involving all sections of the community. NELM Development Trust has implemented many of the ideas proposed by the community.
