Fire Station
Local schoolchildren were among the first to look around Norwich's first new fire station for 30 years when it officially opened on February 3 2006.
Youngsters from Larkman First School and Ranworth First School met the crew at the new North Earlham Fire Station and had a tour of the Bowthorpe Road site. The children had a great time trying on uniforms and climbing into the fire engine cabs.
Chairman of Norfolk County Council John Baskerville and Harry Humphrey, Cabinet member for Fire and Community Protection were joined by representatives from NELM Development Trust to officially open the £2m fire station.
Mr Humphrey said, 'The opening of North Earlham Fire Station is excellent news for the people of Norwich. The siting of the station will not only improve local emergency cover and preventative work in an expanding part of the city, it will also but allow immediate back-up for the city centre.'
Funding for the building was found through NELM Development Trust and so the site is owned by NELM and the fire service will lease back the site and building.
Louise Curtis, Chair of NELM Development Trust, said, 'It's been wonderful to be involved in this exciting project as part of the ongoing work at the Bowthorpe School Site. This is such a great opportunity for residents of the NELM area in terms of employment and regeneration. The opening of the Fire Station breathes new life into the area as part of our long-term improvement plans for local residents.'
The new single-storey North Earlham Fire Station houses three fire engines, personnel quarters, administration and fire training facilities.
